A New Voting Age in Canada

Many young adults do not take voting seriously these days, whether its municipal, provincial or federal. Is it because they're too busy, lazy or whatever their excuse is. The fact is it is appalling, only 25.4%*** of young adults voted last federal election (2011) that is the lowest in Canadian history. The cause is the lack of general knowledge about politics. Last election I asked numerous people which party would they most likely vote for if they could. Most answered "What, who's Party?". The  others answered green party.

Green Party, interesting that most would be leaning towards the Green Party. Besides the fact that the environment is in crisis,I think that it was because children are taught to be "green" or environmentally friendly at a young age, therefore they go with information they know already. Changing the voting age limit 16 years of age would be a worthwhile decision because if the government think that 16 year old should drive they should be able to vote also . Teaching young people to have political opinion early on might change the way they perceive voting, a duty not a chore. Young people are the future of Canada!

Controversy

One thing that will come for sure, if there where a new voting age, is controversy. I'm sure many people would think that younger voters might not be mature enough to have the right to vote. I don't think that 16 year old voters are that far off, in the 1800's and early 1900's it would be crazy to think that women or people of different races could vote! Maybe in 50 years Canada will realize the value of young voters.

To explore the issues that might come up if a 16 years of age voting limit where to be placed I have created a Pro's and Con's list.
